After the Harvest
Three loaves whisked from twenty.
Ten unsold, seven soured.
Two to feed six?
Hunger crawls,
husband and wife
share a loaf.
The sons eat,
hunger hasn’t multiplied.
As for love,
it can divide itself.
The fields call for them.
Time to work.
Crumbs scatter like flattened stars
on weathered wooden floors.
The daughter lays her palm bare.
Only to receive her mother’s share.
Hope surrenders, leaving behind despair.
After the harvest.
